在應用近似法(approximatemethod)解邊界層問題時，將邊界層方程式各項對其斷面積分，自邊界上(y=0)積分至邊界層外緣(y=∞)可得動量積分方程式（參見viscousdeformation）。
然而將邊界方程式以流速分佈u乘之，再予積分，可得能量積分方程式。
就二維非可壓縮層流邊界層流而言，能量積分方程式為式中δ3稱為能量消散厚度(energydissipationthickness)或稱為能量厚度(energythickness)（參見houndarylayerthicknessofdissipation）。
為邊界層外緣之自由流流速(freestreamvelocity)，u為邊界層內之流速分佈。
