糞便大腸菌包含於大腸菌類(coliformgroup)，糞便大腸菌主要是Escherichiacoli，是一種糞便污染指標微生物，它只能寄生在溫血動物腸道中，會隨著糞便被排出。
一個成人每天可以排泄1,000～4,000億個大腸菌類，其中90％以上是E.coli。
將多管醱酵法正反應的菌液植種至ECmediumorA-1broth（參考StandardMethodsfortheExaminationofWaterandWastewater，18thed.，1992），44.5±0.2℃培養24±2小時，會生成氣體者表示有糞便大腸菌的存在。
