就路線測量而言，於勘測階段在地圖上所選路線前進之方位，初測階段所選定之各交點，其交點間所指之方位，皆可稱為概略方位，或稱初步方位。
待施行初測中線測量，大比例尺地形測量後，經紙上定線作業設計，再予確定路線之最後方位（finalorientation）。
